Explain the Basal Metabolic Rate?

The Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) gradually decreases after the attainment of maturity due to a decrease in muscle mass tissues and physical activity. With an increase in  age, the percentage reduction in the total energy requirement as recommended by  ICMR is 20 percent for 60 to 69 years of age and 30 percent for 70 to 79 years of  age and above, although there can be wide individual variations. The Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for elderly as given by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is presented in the following Table.
