Explain Sexual Reproduction ?
In most higher organisms, replication occurs by sexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction begins with a process called meiosis. The products of meiosis become eggs, sperm, and other specialized cells, and contain only a haploid set of chromosomes. Fusion of a sperm and an egg produces a zygote, restoring the original chromosome number when DNA from the two nuclei combine.
These resulting diploid zygote cells then undergo the cell division through mitosis to produce a multicellular individual. All human cells and those of most eukaryotes not involved with sexual reproduction contain two sets of of chromosomes, one derived from the female parent and the other derived from the male.
During the process of meiosis, exchange of genetic material, or genetic recombination occurs. Genetic recombination leads to diversity in species and an increase in likelihood that new generations will survive in a changing environment.
