A data dictionary subsystem keeps way of the definitions of all data items in database. This includes elementary-level data items, fields, group and record-level data structures, as well as relational tables. It keeps way of relationships that is between varieties of data structures. It maintains indexes that are used to access data speedily. It also keeps track of screen and report format definitions that might be used by a range of application programs.
