For the body to function normally, certain amount of body fat is required. This is called essential fat. For women, average amount of essential fat is 1290 and for men, it is 3% of the body weight. Storage fat consists mainly of fat deposited just under the skin or subcutaneous fat. For the average man, 12% of body weight is storage fat and for the average woman, 15% of bodyweight is storage fat. The third category of fats is the non-essential fut., which serves no purpose and may be harmful to health.

Research has shown that an excessive body fat is associated with hypertension, elevated cholesterol and blood lipid levels, higher cardiovascular and diabetes risk factors. Effective nutrition and exercise intervention strategies can be planned to control FM and prevent loss of FFM associated with conditions such as malnutrition, ageing, injury etc.
