Explain how the events of meiosis account for the law of segregation and the law of independent assortment.

In meiosis, the two alleles of every gene are segregated when the two chromosomes in every pair of homologues are separated into dissimilar gametes. Alleles of genes located on dissimilar chromosomes or far apart on the similar chromosome assort independently when homologues are randomly divided during meiosis.
