Drum Brake: The construction of drum brake is clearly shown in Figure 2.40. In a rotating brake drum stationary brake shoes are attached concentric to the axle hub. A back plate is mounted on the axle casing but in case of front axle, the back plate is bolted to the steering knuckle.

The back plate protects the drum and shoe assembly from mud and dust and provides support for the expander, anchor and brake shoe.
