Ethanol

(a) When CH3OH is heated on Cu coil it gives formalin like smell.

(a) It does not give formalin like smell.

(b) When CH3OH is heated with salicylic acid in H­2SO4 (conc.) then methyl salicylate is created which has odour like winter green oil.

(b) No such odour is provided.

(c) It does not give haloform or iodoform test.
