If the electric potential is recognized as a function of x, y, z and one is asked to find the electric field at a specified point in space such as at (0.14m, .25m, -1.00m) it is significant to take all three derivatives first and substitute the values of x, y, and z after the components of the electric field in terms of x, y, and z have been determined.
