While we describe in detail the structure of a eukaryotic cell, it will be useful to examine the structural features of a typical prokaryotic cell as well. Escllericllia coli is an organism found in the intestinal tract of all human beings, and represents a typical prokaryotic organism, which has been intensively investigated. An E.coli cell is about 2pm long and 1 pm in diameter (Fig.l.2). Its cell wall is made of a rigid framework called the peptidoglycan, consisting of polysaccharide chains cross linked by peptide units.
