Line and Staff Organisation: As the industry grow in size and complexity, the line executives could not perform appropriately all other functions as R and D, planning, distribution, legal and public relations. This necessitated the employing of special executives to help line executives and they were termed as Staff since they were recruited to perform specialist or staff functions.
The line executives retain supervisory authority and control over the work of their subordinates while the staff executives relieve the line executives of specific specialized work and advise them on issues referred to them.
