How potassium is essential for the following physiological functions

  • It is vital for photosynthesis. When K + ion is deficient, photosynthesis declines and respiration increases which lowers the plant's carbohydrate supply.
  • It is essential for protein synthesis.
  • It is important in the breakdown of carbohydrates by a process which provides energy for plant growth.
  • It helps to control ionic balance.
  • It is important in the translocation of heavy metals such as iron.
  • It helps the plant to overcome the effects of diseases.
  • It is important in fruit formation.
  • It is involved in the activation of more than 60 enzyme systems which regulate the rates of major plant metabolic reactions.
  • The process of opening and closing of plant leaf pores (stomata) is regulated by potassium, and thus regulates the use of water efficiently.
