Define traffic assignment in transportation system and discuss the major aims of traffic assignment?
It is the method of assigning a set of trip interchange data to a specified transportation system. The vehicular movements that might be observed when demands in the trip matrices are satisfied are reproduced here. The main aims of traffic assignment are to: • estimate the volume of traffic on a network. • estimate the turning movements at intersections. • estimate cost among the origin and destination of a trip. • obtain average network measures, such as total distance covered, total time take, and so on • estimate travel cost and time for a zone-to-zone trip. • get link flows and identify the congested links. • estimate routes to be used among each origin-destination (O-D) pair • analyse each O-D pair that uses a particular path or link. • obtain turning movements for future junction designs.
