- All names assigned to machines on an internet

- Must be unique; either flat or hierarchical

- Flat name space - name is assigned to an address; no structure

- Hierarchical name space - made of several parts; each succeeding part is more specific; central authority assigns part that defines the nature of the organization and the name.
