Define Instrument for Absorbed Radiation - Spectrophotometer?
In contrast to colorimeter, spectrophotometer is an instrument that is capable of splitting the incident radiation into a spectrum producing a radiation of defined wavelength and subsequently measuring the intensity of that radiation. In place of defined wavelength and subsequently measuring the intensity of that radiation. In place of coloured filters, a diffraction grating or glass prism or quartz prism is fitted, which disperses the white light into a continuous spectrum. Total wavelength range, at which measurements can be made includes the visible spectrum (400-750 nm) and extends on each side into the near ultraviolet (360-400 nm) and near infra-red (750-1000 nm).
It is therefore possible to estimate substances which are more or less colourless in the visible region but which absorb light and are therefore coloured, in the ultraviolet or infrared region. These instruments will be available in the laboratory for you to carry out your experiments. Do use them carefully. You should also be aware of the different components/ parts of these instruments. Though it is not very essential, but this information will help you understand the functioning of these instruments more closely. A brief description about the essential parts of photocolorimeter is also included herewith in this section.
