Define Counter Stain - Staining Technique?

Finally, the smear is counter stained with a simple basic dye different in colour from crystal violet. Safranin is the most commonly used counter stain. Since only gram negatives loses the crystal violet stain, these cells absorb safranin and appear pink to red. Gram positives remain purple in colour.
