Define Carbonation - underwater inspection of bridge?

Carbon dioxide is present in the air and attacks the concrete directly. It has the effect of destroying the normal passivity of the concrete coating, thus leading to reinforcement corrosion, but its effects are generally limited to a penetration of approximately 50 mm.
