The carbon atoms in an alkane molecule may be categorized into four types namely

Primary (1o),

Secondary (2o),

Tertiary (3o) and

Quaternary (4o).

The carbon atoms in an organic compound consisting of functional group can be illustrated as α,β, γ, δ.
