Q. Adding Fractions with the Same Denominator?

Adding fractions with the same denominator is easy- you add the numerators (the tops), and you leave the denominator alone!

Pretty easy, right? 2 + 7 = 9 and you leave the 10 alone.

Why does it work? Well, let's say you had a pizza cut into 10 slices. Each slice is 1/10 of a pizza. If you eat 2 slices (that's 2/10), and somebody else eats 7 slices (that's 7/10), then together you have eaten 9 slices (9/10).

So, the two rules you have to remember are:

• The denominators must be the same!

• Leave the denominators alone!
