The Mayor of the City of New York took issue with a number of works in a Brooklyn Museum temporary exhibit titled “Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection” Especially troubling to him was a painting by Nigerian artist Chris Ofili, entitled “The Holy Virgin Mary” In that work, Ofili depicted Mary with African features, and attached a clump of elephant during as well as photographs of female genitalia to his work. The Mayor termed Ofili’s painting “sick and disgusting” He insisted that a city supported museum had no right to display the exhibit.

Could the Mayor prohibit the work from appearing in the show?
