One of the measurements used to determine the health of a person's lungs is the amount of air a person can exhale under force in one second. This is called the force expiratory volume in one second and is abbreviated as FEV. Assume that the mean FEV for 10 year old girls is 2.1 liters and that the population standard deviation is sigma = 0.3. A random sample of 100, 10 year old girls who live in a community with high levels of ozone pollution are found to have a sample mean FEV of 1.95 liters. Can you conclude that the mean FEV in the high pollution community is less than 2.1 liters? Use the alpha = .05 level of significance.
a. Write the null and alternative hypotheses.
b. Calculate the test statistic. Show your work
c. What is the critical value?
d. If we did not have sigma = 10 and were instead given the sample standard deviation as s = 10, what would the test statistic be? The critical value?
