Architectural History PAPER
Paper Assignment: Analysis of a Building
Write an analysis of the building attached. Write down everything you notice: form, material, color, space and volume, and proportion and scale. Identify the use (school building) and its historical period and style.
Then use these notes to organize and write a 1.5 page (single-spaced 12 font) essay in which you analyze the work. The goal of this paper is to sharpen your ability to describe architecture, and the bulk of your writing should be dedicated to that. But you should also free your imagination to include broader observations. For example: Does the building effectively inspire you, or communicate something deeper about its use? Does the work tell us something about the time and conditions in which it was produced? What can the work tell us about the architect?
