Public Health Law and Policy Assignment - Public Health Law Article
Learning outcomes assessed: Describe examples of a law that promotes and protects public health.
Background - For this assessment task, students will write a short essay on an Australian law that protects and promotes public health. You are required to choose a topic from the list provided below. If you have your own topic that you are interested in, you will need to email the Lecturer in Charge (LIC), to seek written approval. Your arguments must be supported by citing peer-reviewed academic literature, credible government and non-government organisation sources, and/or official statistical resources (e.g. ABS, AIHW and WHO) as appropriate.
Purpose: To enable students to describe and analyse a law that protects and promotes the health of the population.
Instructions - Select one Australian public health law from the following list:
1. Reducing gambling associated harms: Broadcasting Services (Online Content Service Provider Rules) 2018.
2. Regulating alcohol consumption: Liquor and Gambling Legislation Amendment Act 2018.
3. Tobacco control: E-cigarette reforms: Supplement to the Tobacco Retailer Guide about reforms 2017.
4. Food regulation: Kilojoule Labelling Scheme Act, 2018.
5. Regulation of drugs: Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Amendment (Real-time Prescription Monitoring) Act 2017.
Specifically, your essay should include:
A brief introduction (1 paragraph):
- Introduce the chosen topic, purpose, and outline what you will cover in your essay
Body (all points should be supported by citing relevant literature):
- Describe the context, principles and intent of the law in promoting and protecting population health and safety (need to be clear about jurisdiction: Commonwealth or state/territory);
- Identify the population group/s targeted by the legislation;
- Assess the gaps and weaknesses in the public health law; and
- Discuss the implications of the legislation in protecting and improving the health and safety of the population.
Conclusion (1 paragraph):
- Summarise the key points/arguments, and implications of the legislation for the future.

You must search the literature, and explicitly refer to peer-reviewed academic literature, credible government and non-government organisation sources, and/or official statistical resources (e.g. ABS, AIHW and WHO) to support your description and discussion of the public health law. A minimum of 8-10 references is expected, the majority should be peer-reviewed references (e.g. journal articles or book chapters).
