Now that you have developed clarity of the actual problem and some potential paths to solutions, you will need to write a proposal to the department head, VP or CEO of the organization to secure approval to move forward with completely studying the problem and reviewing potential solutions.

This is NOT a proposal to implement a solution, this is a proposal to further study the problem and possible solutions.

Format is memo format, no more than 2 pages and should include the following:

· Facts of the problem or goal - (establish need)

· Identification of the scope of the project of research and exploration of solutions (clarify what you need to research and what the possible solutions will solve or not solve. This ensures you stay focused and expectations are clear,)

· Outline of the major steps and timeline for completing the exploration - (who do you need to talk to or survey, are there other companies (your suppliers or customers) you might need to visit to learn more about the actual problem.

· Ask for the resources you will need to develop a solution - (not resources to implement, but resources to develop solutions. This might include time from other department like IT or data management.)

· Be sure to complete your proposal with a conclusion and request for approval to move ahead.
