Assignment:

Based on the general principles, imagine you are a licensed practitioner. You run your own private practice treating adults. A person comes to your office, and judging by the slogan words on their shirt and a brief conversation with them, you realize they hold beliefs and political and social views that are opposite to yours. Even expressing prejudiced views on a particular group of people.

  • Would you treat and provide your services to this person? Why or why not?
  • Would you refer them to someone else? Why or why not?

Imagine you are a graduate student working on a study looking at a new therapy technique that could help adults who have ADHD improve their focus during class lectures. You have been working on this and collecting data for four years. You spend hundreds of hours looking at past research, looking at other techniques and therapists, creating the experimental research design, and getting approval from the Institutional Review Board (IRB). You start having a hard time getting people to participate in your study. In order to get more people to participate, you offer $400 for 1 hour of their time without informing IRB. You finally analyzed your data from 1000 participants and showed that your technique was insignificant (the therapy technique didn't show any differences from the control group). You don't want to start over and truly believe the technique works.

  • Do you change the data to show that the technique does work? Why or why not?
  • Based on the APA Ethical Standards, what are some of the red flags in this example and why? (Name at least one).
