At the time of the 2009 bankruptcy GM had eight North American brands. The initial Sloan strategy of Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac plus GMC, Hummer and Saab. Due to the huge loss in market share over the previous three decades, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Hummer and Saab were eliminated in their reorganization. This left a four-brand strategy of Chevrolet - GMC - Buick - Cadillac in their previous price/segment positions. There are several problems with the present price/segment positions that include GMC and Chevrolet having a similar truck model lineup and Buick being close to Cadillac in market position with an aging buyer base.
