Question: A sample of 780 adults is recruited to participate in a study. All participants are asked to imagine that they are on a small plane and they would have to land the plane because the pilot is incapacitated. After being told this, half of the participants are randomly assigned to watch a video clip showing a pilot landing a plane, and, once the video is over, the participants rate, on a scale of 0-100, how confident they are that they could land the plane without dying. The other half of the participants are randomly assigned to watch no video and to immediately rate their confidence in being able to land the plane without dying. Results showed that those participants who watched the video were more confident, on average, that they could land the plane without dying than those participants who did not watch the video. Why was it important in this study that participants be randomly assigned to either watch or not watch a video about landing a plane?
