Assignment:
Need help answering this discussion board question below.
Developmentally appropriateness plays a major role in early childhood. Read the following scenario and answer the discussion questions for this assignment.
An early childhood teacher of young toddlers from ages: 16 months to 24 months thought it would be a true learning experience for these children to introduce them to activities pertaining to the alphabet. These children had been in her classroom for a couple of months. The teacher's past experience consisted of filling in for lunch breaks in the toddler room to meet the staff ratio. She also had been a Teacher-Assistant for a year with toddlers.
Initially, in Circle Time, the teacher introduced the alphabet by teaching the children to sing the ABC Song. Sara and Sammy the 16-month-old identical twins entertained each other by rolling around on the carpet. Donny, the 20-month old made a few humming sounds as the teacher sang, but soon got up and walked away from the Circle Area. Sally, the 22-month old seemed to be listening and trying to participate in the song. Beth, the oldest child sang and actively participated in the song because her mom had already taught her the ABC Song. The other three children ages: 18-20 months tried to follow along, but because it was too long to sit still in the circle, they soon wandered off to play.
After Circle Time which lasted 12-14 minutes, the teacher provided magnetic alphabet letters along with matching pictures of the letters she intended to teach the children. She asked Donny and Sara to come to the table while the other children played in the classroom. The teacher placed the magnetic letter A with two pictures on the table. One picture was an Apple and the other picture was a Ball. She asked Donny which picture started with the letter A the apple or the ball. He picked up the magnetic letter and put it in his mouth. Sara slapped the pictures on the table with excitement and giggled. Share your thoughts and opinions in response to this scenario.
- Were these activities developmentally appropriate for the age group served?
- Using each of the four domains (i.e. cognitive, physical, social, and emotional), provide an example of what you believe was appropriate or what was inappropriate in the scenario. Students should have four examples altogether.
- Briefly explain what would be an appropriate sensory activity for the 16-month-old identical twins.
- Briefly explain what would be an appropriate sensory activity for Sally.
- Why are activities with a real-life hands-on approach to learning so important for these young children?
- Why is play important for young children? What was your favorite game as a child?
- If you were the Toddler Teacher, what would you have done differently?
