From the beginnings of the United States as a nation, both northern and southern states arranged a series of compromises in an effort to negotiate differing positions on slavery. Until the 1850s both sides were able to maintain the Union through mutual concession, compromise, and agreement. However, the nation divided in the 1850s and the cost of repairing that division was the lives of over 600,000 soldiers.

Select and explain what you believe are the four most significant events of the 1850s that led to the Civil War. Then, place the four events in chronological order and show the progression of events that demonstrates the widening divide between the North and the South as the 1850s progressed. Finally, for each of the four events you selected, explain in detail what occurred, why each event was significant, and how each shows the widening divide between the North and the South.
