Problem

Gail Field is a divorced, self-supporting 56 year old woman who developed a URI (upper respiratory infection) after caring for her grandson who had the same infection. Three weeks later, she developed weakness, numbness, and tingling in her feet that progressed up her body. Her physician recognized the seriousness of her condition and transferred her to a tertiary referral center. Within days, she became totally paralyzed; she had a tracheostomy and was placed on mechanical ventilation. She spent one month in the Neuro Critical Care Unit and several months on a nursing unit before being transferred to your LTAC facility (Long Term Acute Care - rehabilitation for patients still requiring acute care nursing, such as Gail's tracheostomy and ventilator needs). Her only in-hospital complication was pneumonia, which has resolved. The physicians are unsure how long the paralysis will last. Why does potentially fatal respiratory dysfunction occur?
