For the latter, please read this primary source by Thursday morning, which is a 19th century translation of the Persian scholar Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi's influential book on the mathematics of "completion and balancing," known as al-jabr in the original Arabic and algebra in Latin translation:This work by al-Kwarizmi (whose name is where the word "algorithm" comes from) during the Abbasid Caliphate is frequently credited with introducing algebra into the Western world.
