Question: Why do you think deinstitutionalization doesn't work? As a society we have basically changed the locations from the mental health institutions to the prison system. There are many who are incarcerated who experience mental health issues. I work for the department of corrections and I can definitely say there are many women in my institution who were sent to prison because as a state we lack appropriate mental healthcare facilities to address the needs of the mentally ill. The prison system has become the largest mental health institution in the state. With that being said, the psychiatric care the department of corrections provides in my state is second to none. If a mentally ill person is going to be sent to prison, they will be no doubt their mental healthcare needs will be addressed and they will be provided safety, security and opportunity for healing and growth.
