For the essay, please choose ONE of the questions below. Do not write both essays. When responding, please articulate a clear, nuanced thesis supported by a well-organized argument that draws specific evidence from the lectures, readings, primary documents, media, and discussions. You should not need to use outside sources. Quotes - especially from primary sources - are encouraged, but they should generally be short (1 to 1.5 lines in Word) and meaningful for your argument. Total length should be 800 words with normal sized font and margins; please include a word count at the end. Cite any quotes or ideas from the readings with either footnote or parenthetical citations referencing readings from class in the following format (Author, [title if author wrote multiple texts], page number). There is no need for a conclusion of more than a sentence or two. You should not need to cite material from outside of class; if you do please provide a footnote explaining why you needed to consult the outside source.
