For this informal essay, plan to write for up to 30 minutes to explain the reasons why a group of women's rights activitsts went radical in the second decade of the 20th century. To do this, you will have to explain why, in the decades when other groups were making some progress in gaining rights and autonomy, women were not making similar progress. The document packet labelled "Suffragettes" contains a number of primary source -- the main one is a letter from Emmeline Pankhurst that explains the turn toward direct action, even violence (to property not persons). Use these primary sources along with the broad narrative in the textbook for the information you'll use to prove your answer's insight. The essay is due by the end of Wednesday and your two comments on classmates' essays are due by the end of Thursday.
Prompt: Why did the Suffragettes in England turn toward radical activities in 1913 rather than waiting out the change in women's political rights that would probably come their way if they continued peaceful demands and simply waited? Were they really overly impatient or had the women of England suffered long enough without the same political rights as men?
