Ken Gonzales-Day's California Lynching Tree is the history of lynching of people of color in California. He uses photographs to document America's dark history of mob violence out west.

Subject matter = what the image literally depicts- is what you see and then explain what the image is. The meaning is what it is, when explaining it on what you see make it a clear example you explain it to a blind person. And the image stands for what.
