Case Study: This selection from Gregory of Tours' History of the Franks describes the chaotic and violent period following the collapse of the western provinces of the Roman Empire during the late 400s, specifically in the region of Gaul (modern-day France, Belgium, and the Netherlands). Gregory also described the rise of the Frankish warlord Clovis and the creation of the kingdom of the Franks in the early 500s. As you read, keep in mind that the Franks were a relatively small minority that came to be the political and military rulers over a culturally Roman and religiously Christian population.
(Be sure to support your answers with evidence and information from the reading.)
Questions: Answer one of the following prompts.

2. Christianity developed in the urban context of the Roman empire. In the early middle ages it spread to northern Europe and to non-urban (in Roman eyes, barbarian and uncivilized) peoples.
