Assignment:
Please refer to spy Julius and Ethel Rosenberg
The entertainment industry loves movies about spies and covert operations. But who were spies during the Cold War? What did they complete and what motivated them?
Lecture this week provided a number of examples of spies during the early years of the Cold War. Now, it's your turn to find another example of a spy operating after 1960.
1) Who was the spy? What was their background (think birth, education, marital status, knowledge, etc.)?
2) Who did they spy for? Name the specific country and agency. What were their motivations for spying? (as far as we know) Consider especially whether they were spying for their birth country or not.
3) Where did they operate? What kind of information did they provide? Or what kind of things did they do? Were they important? Why or why not?
4) Were they caught? If so, when? If not, how did it come out that they were a spy? Did they turn themselves in? If so, why? Did they face any consequences for their actions?
5) Thinking about your chosen spy and our general view of spies based on the entertainment industry (like James Bond), does your view of espionage change at all? Why or why not?
The forum is set up so you should be able to see each others answers before posting. Try to have different spies! Also, make sure your examples are different from those provided in lecture.
