Question
If you have experienced managing project(s), what ethical challenges have you encountered, and how did you handle them while maintaining integrity and professionalism?
If you have yet to manage a project in real life, how would you ensure that ethical standards are upheld within your projects? You are encouraged to cite a recent (within five years) story related to this topic in your post.
Ethics play a vital role in project management, especially when handling unfamiliar technical work. In a project I managed, I was tasked with cleaning up VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure) groups and organizations. As I wasn't the Subject Matter Expert (SME), this presented challenges in maintaining accuracy and quality.
To uphold ethical standards, I practiced transparency by openly communicating my knowledge gaps with stakeholders and seeking input from SMEs when needed. I ensured I was honest about my limitations, which built trust and prevented misrepresentation of my skills. Collaborating with knowledgeable team members was critical, as they provided insights that helped me avoid costly mistakes. I also documented every decision and action thoroughly to maintain accountability and facilitate traceability.
One key lesson I learned is the importance of fostering a learning mindset. I actively researched VDI best practices and sought guidance, which not only improved my technical understanding but also demonstrated my commitment to the project's success.
For future projects, I will continue to prioritize collaboration, integrity, and professional development. Ethical leadership involves not only addressing technical gaps but also ensuring that the project meets its goals while respecting the expertise and contributions of every team member.
