Discussion Post
In this module's materials, we discussed the differences between professional and citizen-legislator models of state legislatures. Which of these models seems preferable? What are some potential advantages or disadvantages of each of these models?
Student Response
Professional and citizen legislators models both have their distinct advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion, Professional legislatures are more beneficial than citizen legislator models. My overall reason why I think professional legislators are superior is there is more time, expertise, and influence available at the professional level. One of the significant differences between the two legislatures is the time dedicated.
In a citizen legislature, there are time restraints in the sessions because the people involved usually are maintaining a full-time career in another field along with their legislative obligation. The advantage that professional legislatures provide is salaries.
As a result, there is an increased incentive to serve and ensures financial stability were all efforts can are invested into the obligations of the legislature. Although I believe professional legislatures are the best option overall, the citizen legislator is a much more cost-effective option. I also think having people who are willing to dedicate time aside from their full-time job for the good of a community is an advantage as well.
That action shows a genuine desire to make a positive change and improvements. Ultimately the goal of the legislature is to make laws that are hopefully beneficial for all. With that notion in mind, I believe the professional legislature is preferable than the citizen legislature.
