Overview

The final project for this course is the creation of a Strategic Plan, Public Policy Initiative.

Individuals who work in the political arena are often asked to devise and implement a plan to effectively advocate for a particular public policy change.

Imagine that you are working for a political party of your choice and are asked to develop a strategic plan outlining an approach to effectively implement a public policy change in your community. Your employer also asks you to communicate your policy recommendation to various stakeholders or actors, including government officials, media, the public, etc.

The project is divided into four milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Module Two, Module Four, Module Six, and Module Seven. The final submission will occur in Module Nine.

In this assignment you will demonstrate your mastery of the following course outcomes:

Compare and contrast the central principles and concepts of contemporary political philosophies and ideologies for their influences on public policy

Analyze modern contemporary political thought for its influence on shaping the relationship between individual and government within political party platforms

Assess the relevancy of ethical and moral consequences on the philosophies and ideologies that drive political parties' various policy choices

Assess the strategies used by political parties in communicating and fostering political views that shape political and public dialogue around public policy issues

Evaluate public policy positions of political parties from the perspective of their history, their place in the political process, and their identified political and social ideological framework

Your paper should answer the following question: What is the best strategy for implementing a new public policy initiated by a political party?

Specifically the following critical elements must be addressed:

I. Introduction, Political Party

a) What political party are you working for? Analyze the political ideology that best represents the beliefs of this party.

b) What are the central principles and concepts of this political party's ideology? Substantiate claims using scholarly, peer-reviewed research.

c) Why is it important for an individual to hold a political ideology? Why is it important for a political party to have a political ideology?

II. Introduction, Public Policy Initiative

a. What public policy initiative are you tasked to advocate for? In other words, choose a policy initiative that your employer (political party) wants you to advocate for.

b. From the perspective of its political and social ideological framework, critique the policy position of the political party you are working for.

III. Contemporary Political Theories

a. Assess the central ethical and moral considerations of the major contemporary political philosophies and ideologies of the political party you are working for. Substantiate claims using scholarly, peer-reviewed research.

b. Compare and contrast the central tenets of the political party's ideology with the central tenets of other major contemporary political
philosophies and ideologies. Substantiate claims using scholarly, peer-reviewed research.

c. What is your opinion? Do you agree with how each of these contemporary political philosophies and ideologies assess ethical and moral
consequences? What might have shaped or influenced your opinion?

IV. Public Policy

a. Compare and contrast the foundational political ideology of the party with the party's policy choices in practice.

b. Analyze how the central tenets of the political party's ideology are represented in the party platform of the public policy initiative that you are tasked to advocate for. How are they represented? OR How are they not represented?

V. Communication Strategy: Develop a strategy to best communicate the new policy that you are advocating for to various actors or stakeholders including:

a. Government Officials

b. Media

c. Public

VI. Conclusion:

a. Analyze how your public policy choice aligns with the party platform. In other words, what are the key ideological similarities and differences?

b. How you would explain any key differences between the policy and what the party stands for ideologically?

c. Assess the strategies used to help inform potential response(s) to opposition of your proposed policy.

d. Considering your proposed strategy, the party platform, and the party's ideology, what is the role of ideology in the development of public policy?
