Assignment:
Answer the following question using the answers below: Which most accurately describes the history of Jim Crow?
A. When the Supreme Court ruled "separate but equal" accommodations were allowed on trains at the end of the 19th century, southern states engaged in the process of segregating black people from white people in public and ultimately disenfranchising them through legal loopholes. All-white police forces and juries made sure that black people had no recourse for action and looked the other way when extrajudicial force was used. The NAACP and other organizations chipped away at Jim Crow's legality in the courts, but organizations like SCLC and SNCC led nonviolent demonstrations that ultimately forced the federal government to pass laws ending Jim Crow.
B. Jim Crow began immediately after the Civil War as southern leaders came into power and created the first Black Codes which continued throughout Reconstruction and into the 20th century. These morphed into Jim Crow laws meaning that black people were still slaves, despite the 13th Amendment. Jim Crow only ended when John F. Kennedy declared a National Emergency after the events in Birmingham, AL.
C. Jim Crow never existed; it was made up by black activists like Stokely Carmichael who believed that the only way for Black Power to take root and the subjugation of white people to begin is to make white beople look like the bad guys.
