Interpreting the Law

Congress passes bills, which become law when the president signs them, and then, it is up to the U.S. Supreme Court to interpret the law's final meaning when a challenge arises. Additionally, the Supreme Court is tasked with interpreting the U.S. Constitution when challenges arise with American's Civil Liberties. Civil Liberties are defined as protections against government interference in our lives. The Bill of Rights or the First 10 Amendments to the Constitution are Civil Liberties.

Interpreting the meaning of these protections depends on the Justice and depends on the majority who sit on the high Court at any one time in history to this year's Supreme Court term. Conservative justices believe in interpreting the Constitution as it was written and intended to mean in 1787. Moderate to Progressive justices believe in interpreting the document as a living and evolving document that meets the times we are in. The word privacy is not listed anywhere in the Bill of Rights nor in the Constitution, yet the Supreme Court has interpreted the 4th and 9th Amendments to guarantee privacy.

Directions: Pick 1 Supreme Court Justice. Find one majority or dissenting opinion that justice wrote in the last two years. Please note that the justice you picked may not have written a majority opinion in the last two years.
