A drug company, which manufactures and distributes a patented drug, has approached you for suggestions. The drug has been very successful and profitable for treating depression for a number of years. However recent announcements by rival companies indicate that they have developed drugs which have the same benefits, but which do not violate the patent. What will happen to the demand curve for this drug for the company? What will happen to the market supply curve? Describe the changes in market structure which are likely to occur. What should our client do to try to maintain profitability for this product?
