Whether or not a sworn officer can wear a religious headdress while on duty depends on which department they work for. Many cities including, New York City, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Memphis, and San Francisco would allow officers to wear hijabs (Tolan, 2017). These departments stand on the belief that diversity and religious inclusion help to make a strong department and attract a variety of recruits. Many more cities either don’t have a stated policy or would not allow an officer to wear a hijab for safety concerns or the desire to have a uniformed look among all officers (Tolan, 2017). However, trends are moving in favor of more departments allowing religious headdresses so long as they have safety clips that would release the covering during a physical altercation (Tolan, 2017). I personally stand with Lt. David Robinson from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department when he stated, “We're in the business of defending peoples' freedom and liberty. We would not infringe on officers' beliefs.” (Tolan, 2017). It would be blatant hypocrisy to deny officers a religious freedom while asking them to risk their lives to defend the liberties of others.
