Takaki's book, first written at the height of what I would characterize as widespread multiculturalism, gives us a wonderful overview. The Estes and Dunbar-Ortiz essay build upon a critique of settler-colonialism. We will return to this in subsequent weeks, in greater depth. For now, think about how Takaki and Estes and Dunbar-Ortiz frame the history of the US, and the questions they ask of it, through their analytical lens. While both essays are sharply critical and, especially in the case of Estes and Dunbar-Ortiz, unflinchingly so, they also offer up moments of hope, crouched in sustained and everyday acts of resistance.
