Assignment
In a media course - this assignment is fundamental - and this seemed like the best place for it. We consume - read, watch, and listen to media. We all have our own rhythm in which we check our favorite websites and news sources. News by it's nature is new and ongoing.
We have learned how social media is an echo chamber that pushes us towards confirmation bias - Facebook uses algorithms that let us see certain stories and not others. Your task here will be to monitor your own media habits - particularly where you get your news.
Submit: 350 - 500 words and include any sources used on a works cited page.
1. Pick 3 Media Sources. Two that you frequent and one that you are aware of - but you would never normally visit.
2. When and for how long do you visit your 2 favourite sources? Why do you visit them frequently? Structure? Content? Special Interests or perspectives?
3. For the one you don't like - why don't you like it? why wouldn't you visit it? Why don't you identify with the perspectives and content featured on this source?
4. What are the demographics for your favourite news sources?
5. Why do you trust some sources and not others? What makes news believable for you?
6. Find the comments section on one of the sites (any of the 3). Are the comments moderated or not?
7. What do you think that Trump and his Democratic opponents have up their sleeves for the next election? How will social media be used similarly and differently than the way it was in 2016?
8. Be sure to respond to at least one classmate's post!
