Scenario

Sheik, Bola, and Randi are on a team project for an ASU Online engineering course. Sheik is a bit nervous as this is their first online class, so they send out a friendly introduction email to the team 5 days before the first deliverable due date. Randi responds immediately, assigning each team member parts to complete and tells Sheik to compile and submit the final document. Sheik notices they do not hear from Bola all week. Finally, minutes before the deadline as Sheik is waiting at their computer, Bola sends her completed components along with a short apology. Sheik is frustrated but submits the assignment at the deadline.

Later, the team schedules a team meeting on Zoom for the second deliverable. While Sheik and Randi arrive on time, Bola shows up 15 minutes late. To start, the team reads through the assignment instructions and talks about what to do for the remainder of the meeting. They decide to begin brainstorming design ideas; Sheik and Bola start talking about their solutions but Randi cuts them off, stating their ideas definitely are not feasible. Randi tells them they should use his idea because it makes the most sense and he has the most experience in this field. Sheik begins to object but Randi already starts typing up his idea in the shared document so they decide to move forward with Randi's idea. Later, they individually work on their deliverable components and again Bola sends her part to Sheik later than agreed upon.

After the second deliverable is submitted, the students are asked to provide feedback to each other. Sheik gives great reviews even though they have some concerns, hoping that the team performance will improve. Randi gives mixed reviews to both teammates stating that they need to improve their work and have better ideas. Bola gives good reviews to Randi because she is worried that he will get mad at her if she gives constructive feedback.

Over the next several weeks, they work individually on a shared document for the final deliverable but do not update each other on their progress. As the weeks go by, the frustration within the team grows. Sheik and Bola get more discouraged as Randi leaves comments on their work stating it is not good enough and that they need to follow Randi's instructions. Sheik and Randi can't understand why Bola's contributions are consistently delayed and lacking in quality. Sheik looks at Bola's contributions and finds they are missing some requirements of the project; Sheik decides to fix Bola's work on the document rather than bring it up with her directly.

The lack of collaboration is taking its toll. Without regular updates, the team's work starts to feel disjointed and disconnected. They submit their assignment but all three of them are disappointed in the final product. The project falls short of their initial expectations and when they receive their final grade, it is not as good as they hoped.

When it's time for the final peer evaluations sent to the professor, Bola shares she has been working overtime to support her family. She did not fully understand the needs of the project and knew she needed help but was afraid to seek it out from the professor or her teammates. Randi shares his frustration with the team aspect of the project, stating it would be much better if he could do it on his own. Sheik writes that they have regrets on how the project played out and thinks it may be their fault that things did not go well.
