Sustainability and the SDGs in Business
Assignment Report
Purpose:
This assignment is designed for you to develop a deep insight into the realities of starting and managing a sustainability-focused business. The task is for you to synthesise your learnings from engaging with our sustainability leaders and the subsequent PESTEL and SWOT analysis as well as the relevant literature in a report targeted at sustainability entrepreneurs. By aligning your recommendations with specific SDG targets you are further analysing the SDGs in a business context.
Topic:
Based on what you have learned from Sustainability Leaders across several sectors and the academic and non-academic literature write a report that highlights good practice for the launch and management of a sustainable business
Task:
Write a report structured into Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG see Appendix A for details) pillarsthat synthesises your PESTLE and SWOT analyses of each of our business sectors/speakers as well as relevant academic and non-academic literature. Your analysis should be formulated into recommendations for entrepreneurs wanting to start a sustainable business in Aotearoa New Zealand and link each recommendation to the relevant Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) or SDG targets, wherever possible.Conclude your report by identifying the three recommendations you consider the most important, supported by rationale for the selection of each of the three.
Audience:
Sustainability Entrepreneurs that are about to launch their first sustainability-focused business/enterprise
Educational Scaffolding:
Assignment 2 builds on the foursustainability leader-focused workshops and the PESTLE and SWOT analyses completed for each speaker. The knowledge developed during the workshops and your research of the related literature form the foundation for this report.
Guidance
• There is no formula for the balance of sources consulted, instead the markers will be looking for evidence that information from guest speakers as well as from academic and non-academic sources has been analysed.
• While you have had the opportunity to learn from representatives of specific sectors of Aotearoa New Zealand's economy, your report should provide generic sustainability-focused good practice recommendations for the broader Aotearoa New Zealand business environment, rather than for specific sectors
• Use the full SWOT analysisfor each sector/speaker to inform your report. Don't just focus on how to maximise the strengths and realise the opportunities, but also how to mitigate weaknesses and threats where possible
• Acknowledge the source of each recommendation through appropriate referencing. If the recommendation is informed by a presentation by one of our Sustainability Leadersthen the speaker should be cited as a personal communication (see APA Referencing for guidance). Academic and non-academic sources should be referenced in the usual APA style. Please note that the SWOT and PESTEL frameworks merely support your group's analytical processesand should as such not be referenced because they simply rephrase information provided by the speaker or website (reference the speaker or their organisation's website instead)
• When analysing the link between your recommendation and a relevant SDG target you will find this website particularly useful. When identifying a target make it clear which SDG the target refers to, i.e.Target 8.4 as the fourth target of SDG8, and add the target phrasing. In the case of Target 8.4: Improve resource efficiency in consumption and production
• If appropriate, you can link a recommendation to more than one target
• As the report is driven by the formulation of recommendations, and the linking of your recommendation to the SDGS is a secondary task, not every SDG needs to be linked, nor is there a minimum number of SDGS to be linked to recommendations.
• Please note that there may be cases where it is acceptable to link your recommendation to one of the 17 SDGs rather than specific targets due to the broader focus of a recommendation compared the specific focus of the targets. In other casesyour recommendation may be valid and valuable but can't be linked to a SDG target; in some cases that is acceptable too.
The report should be structured as follows:
- Cover pagewith your name, Assignment title, date and word count
- Introduction which outlines purpose and structure of the report
- Body which distinguishes between recommendations that fall into the Environmental, Social, Governance pillars
- Conclusions which outline your top three recommendations
- References in APA style and arranged alphabetically
