Case: In the 21st century, most Americans would probably assume that if they had been alive in the years before the American Revolution, they would have joined the group that called themselves Patriots. We assume today that the Patriots (Whigs) were fighting for freedom and independence, against the Loyalists (Tories) who wanted to accept being ruled from Britain. Many people today almost consider the situation then as a simple case of "good guys vs. bad guys." Indeed, most people who live in the area around Quincy College today are proud to have their New England NFL team called "The Patriots", named after the supposed "good guys" in the American Revolution.

Nonetheless, like most things in life, this view of the Patriots as the "good guys" is not so simple. After all, the Patriots (Whigs) did use violence, did break existing laws, and did threaten some of their fellow colonists and British officials with bodily harm. And, it would be extremely naïve to think all "Patriots" did this in the name of "liberty." Clearly some wanted independence from Britain for materialistic reasons and personal gain. This does not make them "bad guys", but is something for us to think about.

And we should also think about something else. In our own time, the United States has seen widespread demonstrations take to the streets on issues related to local, state, and federal government policies, showing that profound divisions exist in American society. In the 1760s and 1770s, the "Patriots" were also, in part, demonstrating in the name of reforming British policy, and Colonial America was at least as much divided then, as Americans are divided today.

you need to turn off your modern understanding of "Patriots" as the good guys "by definition". Consider what you have learned about this period of American history, and ask yourself honestly what you would have done had you been alive at the time.

In just a few sentences, make clear in your post:

Whether you would have been a Patriot, a Loyalist, or whether you would not have joined either group, and would have simply kept your head low and got on with your life, while the other two groups took to the streets and eventually went to war? And,
Explain why you think this is what you would have done...
