Case: Nathanial "Nat" Turner (1800-1831) was an enslaved man who led a rebellion of enslaved people on August 21, 1831. His action set off a massacre of up to 200 Black people and a new wave of oppressive legislation prohibiting the education, movement, and assembly of enslaved people. The rebellion also stiffened pro-slavery, anti-abolitionist convictions that persisted in that region until the American Civil War (1861-65). Watch this video and check out Ch 11 subsection Nat Turner's Rebellion for more information.

Question 1: Explore the dynamic of the move after Nat Turner's rebellion in Virginia to possibly emancipate people. What would have been the benefit to slave owners here and why did they move to create even harsher laws instead?

Question 2: What explains the upwards of 200 freepeople or enslaved people murdered after the event? Was this a representation of the fear slave rebellions symbolized to slave owners in the south? Was it simply reactionary? Explore this.

Question 3: In your opinion, at what point in violence justified or not justified? Where do you stand on the legacy of Nat Turner's rebellion? Explain.
