Assignment: Cross Cultural Health and Wellness Practices

Choose 1 the following choices as the final in this course. The final must be submitted through Blackboard by 11:59 PM on November 27, 2017 and counts as 20% of the course grade.

1. Interview with someone born into a culture other than your own.

a. If you are in a role as a health care provider and can interview a patient, ask Kleinman's 8 questions* and write about the experience. Be sure keep the patient's personal information confidential and do not violate HIPAA.

b. If you are interviewing someone outside of the healthcare field:

i. The person should not be a relative or someone you know well
ii. Keep the individual's identity private

1. During the interview, does the individual converse in English or do you speak in their language, or do you have a translator, or another method of communication?

2. Was the body language/non-verbal communication displayed different than that of your culture?

iii. You may ask questions that you come up with yourself or you may use these as a guideline:

1. What country did you immigrate from?
2. What is your native language?
3. Is it difficult to communicate in the US?
4. What were your toughest challenges to adjusting to life in the US?
5. Was it easy to make friends here? Why or why not?
6. What is your opinion of blood tests? Autopsies?
7. What do you think of the American healthcare system?
8. If your grandmother were to become ill, who would make the decisions regarding her care?
9. What makes people sick?
10. What do you miss most about your native country?

c. Submit an essay comparing the answers you received during your interview with the concepts learned in the course. How does your interviewee conform to his/her cultural generalizations and how do they differ? What you have learned from interviewing this individual from a culture other than your own?

2. Journal Article Summary on a topic related to Health and Culture

a. Must be a "peer reviewed" article that has been approved by the course instructor
b. A copy of the article or a link to access it must be included
c. The student must summarize in own words or reference accurately.
d. What is the main idea addressed?

i. How is an issue/problem addressed/solved?
ii. What are the article results?
iii. What are your thoughts on the article content?

3. A Research paper on the Cultural Disparity in Healthcare outcomes

a. Minorities in the US do not have the same outcomes as the majority. Research the topic and with at least 3 academic resources discuss why the disparities may exist and what can be done to alleviate them.

b. The presentation may be double spaced and typed in APA style or it may be presented in Power Point.

4. Cultural Profile on a culture that was NOT already covered in Class

a. Topics covered should include:

i. Communication
ii. Family/Gender issues
iii. Time Orientation
iv. Expression of Pain
v. Pregnancy and Birth
vi. End of Life Issues
vii. Health Related Practices
viii. Minimum of 3 different academic sources cited

The final papers/interviews will be evaluated as follows:
